The Story Behind the Land

The Medway Riverside plots were originally acquired by Marcial Doporto following the inheritance of a 74-foot barge from a close friend who passed away over 15 years ago.

After years of mooring on the River Lee in East London, Marcial set out to find private mooring land of his own, wanting freedom from weekly rent and restrictions. While no suitable sites were available in East London, he discovered this quiet stretch of land on the River Medway in Kent and purchased it in 2011, having the barge professionally towed downriver to its new home.

Shortly afterwards, the worst storm since 1953 caused the river to rise by over four metres, sinking the barge. After three months of work, it was successfully refloated. By that time, Marcial had become a father and chose to step back from the major restoration project.

The land was then opened up as mooring plots, rented to others, and has since evolved into what it is today. With the barge now sold, the riverside is being offered as individual plots, allowing others to enjoy secure, private access to this unique stretch of the Medway.
